Monday 2/28

    We are coming close to finishing our container. The bulk of it is built, but we still have a little ways to go. The main thing that container development accomplished today, was building all of the parts. We added to more compartments to the container in order to have more cameras. We made the other two containers out of koozies ( similar to the built of the rest of the container ). After we finished them we put on the finishing touches ( ceram wrap for the lenses ), then attached the whole project. It was ready for testing! Tomorrow we will see just how well it works.

Classwork

Today, in class, we took the container to see how well it works if we throw it from the bleachers. However, we attached our container to Maybry, Gray, and Elizabeth O.'s group's parachute. When we threw it, it the parachute worked properly, and slowed down the falling of the container, and the Koozies cushioned the fall. We will probably join groups together and work in one large group so that we can make adjustments and changes based on the parachute and the container so that when we test them we can put them together. Our container works very well in terms of safety, stability, and security, but we still need to make another for the digital camera and the phone. Hopefully ours will be the one to go into space.

Homework 3

Homework 3
Objective 1
  1. A solution is a mixture of two or more substances. A colloid is a substance that is microscopically spread through out another substance. And finally a suspension is a fluid containing solid particles.
  2. When a solution forms one of the substances will dissolve into the other.
  3. A solution has a lower freezing point than a pure solvent. This happens when a solute is added to a solvent. For example in sea water the salt content remains as a liquid at temperature below zero degrees Celsius ( the freezing point of water normally).
  4. You have made a solution because it mixes in the water and then settles down.

Objective 2

  2. Solubility is the property of a solid, liquid, or solute to dissolve in a liquid solvent to form a homogeneous solution of the solute in the solvent.
  3. Temperature, pressure and the type of solvent affect the solubility of a substance.
  4. Solubility depends on temperature as heat is required to break down molecules.
  5. You can identify a substance by its solubility because it is a characteristic property of matter.
Objective 3
  1. Acids are sour, are derived from the word acere, relase hydrogen ions, and are corrosive to metals.
  2. Bases are slippery, release hydroxide ions, usually end in “ide”, and are found in faily appliances like soap.
  3. An acid turns litmus red and a base turns litmus paper blue.
  4. The acid would taste very sour and a base would be bitter.
  5. you wear gloves when spreading fertilizer because it has a corrosive nature and will damage your skin.
Objective 4
  1. Hydrogen ions are found is acids.
  2. When acids and bases are combined in water they form hydronium ions.
  3. A base and water will form hydroxide ions.
  4. A subtance’s pH tells you how strong of an acid or base it is.
  5. A substance with a pH of 6 would contain less H+ ions than one with 3 H+ ions.
Objective 5
  1. The two types of digestion are chemical and mechanical.
  2. Chemical digestion is accomplished through the use of digestive enzymes and mechanical digestion is the actual process of chewing food with your teeth.
  3. It would slow down the digestion as the chemical system which follows the mechanical system would have more work to do.
  4. The pH in your mouth is around 7, 2 in your stomach, and around 7 in your small intestine.
  5. Th variations of the pH in different parts of the body are important as they determine wether they are acidic or basic.
Objective 6
  1. Acid = a substance that reacts with a base
  2. Neutralization = a chemical reaction where an acid and a base react to form a salt
  3. indicator = a chemical compound that is added in small amounts to a solution so that the acidity or basicity can be determined visually
  4. corrosive = a substance that will damage or destroy the surface of any other substance it makes contact with
  5. hydroxide ion = a diatomic anion consisting of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, it often is the product of some bases
